“The contrast between the student’s world and Samoa creates a effective milieu for therapeutic work.” –Karen Nelson, Ph.D., Clinical Director
Our team of experienced, licensed clinicians (U.S. licensure) utilizes a solutions-oriented, strengths-based approach to treatment. Our clinical work is based on the most current developmental research and is practical, supportive and individualized. With the help of our physical and cultural surroundings, our clinical team has created a treatment milieu in which every aspect of a student’s life is designed—subtly or explicitly—to promote reflection, connection, and personal growth.
Coral Reef Academy In addition to a milieu approach to treatment, we provide students with counseling sessions and psycho-educational groups, specifically:
- Individual Therapy – 1 hour/week
- Family Therapy (using videophone) – 1 hour/week
- General Therapy Group – 2 x 1.5 hours/week
- Psycho-educational group—1.5 hours/week
- Addiction Group – 2 x 1.5 hours/week
- Out of Office, Activity-Based Therapist Interaction – Extensive
Our clinical team uses proven, research supported modalities to ensure that each boy at Coral Reef Academy receives therapy tailored to his needs. We train our educators, mentors and other direct care staff so that they are equipped to support the therapeutic work that occurs both in and out of the therapist’s office. Some of our favored approaches include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and—for boys struggling with chemical dependency—SMART Recovery, Change Models and traditional 12 –step and multi-modal work.
